The real reason for Radiohead not playing in Glastonbury -UPDATED
The organizers of Glastonbury Festival said that Radiohead won’t play in this year Glastonbury because they had other plans for that period! Thom Yorke, while being in Brussels for his Big Ask Europe campaign revealed that the real reason for not playing in Glastonbury was the fact that public transport is not an option for going to the festival!
According to AtEase Thom told : “What we’re trying to do now is only play in areas that have a public transport infrastructure in place. So that rules out Glastonbury for this year. Maybe we can work out a plan for the future. They’re probably sick of the sight of us anyway“. He added: “One of the interesting things we discovered is how people get to our big shows. A lot of the time people are driving with one or two people in a car and that’s an ecological disaster“.
UPDATE: On March 12 Thom made a statement to make things clear. According to his statement his sayings were taken out of context: Here is what Thom said in Dead Air Space: “the last thing i did was talk to a UK newspaper called the SUn, which is owned by one of my least favourite people Rupert Murdoch. In the course of the interview i mentioned that we had a carbon footprint study commisioned and the biggest shock was the significance of the all travel to the show by the audience“. He added: “I also mentioned that we were not playing Glastonbury this year but were doing our own shows in London. Not because of transport issues but because the festival goers at Glastonbury were more than likely sick of the sight of us.. it felt a little early to be doing it again, we felt as if we had only just played there.unfortunately, as is the way with such newspapers my words were taken out of context and implied we were not playing Glastonbury because there was no public transport infrastructure. well that’s bollocks.but these things spread.i have been talking to the Eavis’s about this and apologised for any misunderstanding and they are totally cool with it.“
Thom Yorke’s Interview for Big Ask Europe
Thom Yorke in an Interview talks about Big Ask Europe and starts Europe Wide Climate Campaign.
Thom Yorke starts Europe Wide Climate Campaign
The activistic action of Thom Yorke is very popular! According to the London Paper Today (February 27 2008), Thom launched the European Climate Campaign in order to push the european Goverments to reduce the carbon dioxide emissions. Yorke and the organization “Big Ask Europe” target in a 30% reduction of carbon dioxide emissions till 2020 and 90% till 2050! This seems to one of the most important attempts to reverse the ecological problems caused by emissions!
Groups from 17 european countries are part of the Big Ask Europe and all of them “force” European Union to push the member countries to reduce emissions. Yorke tries to extend the action of Big Ask Europe in other countries, after the success of the organization to convince the UK goverment to introduce a ground-breaking Climate Change Law. The organization calls the citizens of European states to send environmental messages to their goverments!
In his press release Thom said:
“We will never wake from the nightmare of climate change unless our national governments and the European Union act. They are the only ones who can put the structures in place that will help us tackle climate change. That is why we are launching The Big Ask in seventeen countries across Europe. By committing to annual cuts in our emissions at a national and European level we can play our part in tackling climate change, and set an example for the rest of world to follow. Hundreds of thousands of people want to see their governments doing more about climate change. If you are one of them you can find out more about The Big Ask campaign in your country at www.thebigask.eu.”
It is really nice when a great artist use his power for good purposes. The Earth found a great friend in Thom Yorke‘s face! But we shouldn’t forget that every single citizen of this world can use his power to push goverments to apply Environmental Laws!
